For anyone who has seen any of the Star Wars Saga on the big screen, the timeless stories and characters resonate and appeal in different ways. The one universal truth is that most enjoyed the experience!
When the first film was released in 1977, I had been in the film business just one year and knew very little more than what other actor-friends had told me of their experiences. The visionary and untested mix of green screen, models, puppets and a mere handful of central characters amidst a myriad cast of ‘faceless’, masked extras and cast members was the daring project of an under-funded, young producer/director with an epic vision at the helm. Against all expectations it was a huge hit! The success of this film astonished everyone – not least those involved - and suddenly a new phenomenon was launched into movie legend. When I was called to work on The Empire Strikes Back, I was under no illusion - I was just A. N. Other masked character padding out the action. But that misapprehension soon faded and I found myself in the midst of an exciting project unlike any other I had yet workedon!
That other films have since grossed more takes nothing away from the magnificent vision of George Lucas and his team. The resounding popularity of all completed films represents the fruits of inventive and talented technicians creating new processes and techniques from start to finish. Other films made since have copied and benefited from that pioneering work and I am very grateful that I had the great opportunity to work on two of the original three films.
